The much-anticipated, all-new Dakine Wetsuit range has now arrived into our warehouse and is unpacked ready for you lot to get stuck into, we take a look at what all the hype’s about.
We already love Dakine for their quality products and innovative design and the reason we’re excited for this one is because it’s a product that’s had a ground-up redesign. A redesign that includes improved eco-credentials, with reductions in petrochemical use, reduced PAHs and CO2 output in production, solvent-free lamination, lower water usage in fabric dying and fair-trade factory usage. Dakine say that they wanted to create a best-in-market wetsuit that focused on performance, warmth and durability with a reduced environmental impact. We can pretty much say that this is one of the best summer suits we’ve tried.
On the performance side of things, the Cyclone offers great freedom of movement and that’s mostly due to Dakine’s unique Apex Fit in both men’s and women’s cut and sizes - no sagging on the legs or bum and no uncomfortable bunching on the elbow creases! The triple lock, no-stitch seams are all double-glued and reinforced so you’ll be happy to move, stretch and flex without the worry of splitting those paddle zones around the upper back and shoulders or fatiguing high-stretch areas. And the Cyclone is exclusively designed with Dakine’s durable DK-Lite Limestone Neoprene, what they call their ‘next level in flexibility and exceptionally low weight.’ It’s so tricky to make, that they only make limited quantities of the material. Derived from non-petrochemicals (you can read more on the Cyclone’s page here in our store), you’ll only find it used on the Cyclone range. Another reason to love this suit!
When it comes to warmth, we’re really impressed with what Dakine call their Hexo-therm layer. This lines their eco-minded DK_Lite limestone based, flexible neoprene outer with a warm but stretchy fleece in a funky honeycomb design covering just the core areas - chest, back and upper legs. Of course, the snug fit helps with the suit’s thermal properties and it also comes with Dakine’s innovative Curv Lock. This unique zip free entry panel creates a water tight, flush free seal which allows for greater freedom of movement and fewer components likely to fail. Smooth skin neoprene completes the watertight seal around the neck, arms and legs.
One other thing: even though the Cyclone is incredibly lightweight thanks to the re-engineered, eco-minded materials, there’s no compromise on durability. The suit includes compression cut cuffs to prevent fraying, resist panels on knees and elbows and solvent-free lamination.
As our reviewer JB says, it’s not cheap but you definitely get great quality and it’s super warm. He reckons it even helped his surfing performance too thanks to its lightweight flexibility… we say a big yes please to anything that gets us riding longer and better!
